In 1933, a large book burning took place in this square in front of Humboldt University. This was a catastrophic event, put on by the Nazi government, that burnt the works of over 20,000 authors, some Jewish, some not. The memorial now is amazing. Under this piece of glass, there is a room with bookshelves big enough to theoretically hold 20,000 books. IF you look just right, you can see the bookshelves under the glass.
