It seems so simple now, sunlight passing through colored glass becomes colored. It's science. However, 800-900 years ago, when the original gothic churches were new, such illuminations were not so easily understood. A church interior, bathed in the dazzling stained light projections of new stained glass windows, seemed somehow closer to heaven, or, better yet, as if heaven had, somehow, come closer to it. Midday, on sunny, late-fall days, the south, outer aisle of Washington National Cathedral gives us some sense of this glorious mystery.
