Leaning Facades. Notice the third house from the left. Canal houses were often built with a deliberate tilt to them. This tilt facilitated the winching up of goods on the outside of the house to keep them from bumping into the outside of the building. The entrances and stairs were too narrow for the movement of furniture into the house in any manner but through pulleys on the outside. Amsterdam, Netherlands. October 2005
