Ephesus was one of great cities of Antiquity. It was a regional capital in Ancient Greek times, in the Roman Empire and in the Byzantine Empire which followed the fall of Rome. Its importance declined after the Muslim conquest in the 7th C AD. It was finally abandoned in the 15th C.
