Album Info:

Taken from the South side, and the SW gate is the 'V' shape to the left of shot. The ramparts were built from stone, some of it unmortared, up to 6- 12 feet higher than you see them now, soil-covered. Much of it was reused in subsequent reoccupation periods. However, the castles we know of now, only started to be built after the Norman invasion of AD 1066. When you look at this, imagine the wooden palisade fence, around the circumference; the towers, and just maybe the sounds of music, light from fires and the smell of cooking food. Really, the name "Fort" isn't correct, it is actually a fortified town. Several Hundred people lived in thatched huts which filled the interior. This is the best side to see the place; the North side has vegetation obscuring the ramparts, and anyway, the main A303 trunk road runs about a mile away, too noisy, but okay if you're going to or from Stonehenge; it's a direct route to London too, but we won't talk about that!
