The tower is a minaret of a mosque built by the Ottoman Turks. The citadel is much older, but it wasn't built by King David, who set Jerusalem as the capital of Israel 3000 years ago. The citadel was first built "only" 2000 years ago by Herod the Great, the Roman-Appointed king of Judea (Judah). The Judeans were the early Jews, people of the southern of the two kingdoms into which Israel has split. Today the citadel holds an excellent museum for the history of Jerusalem.
