You will see many two story and three story buildings along with signs like this. Lauderdale Courts has been renamed Uptown Square. Every building has been renovated to provide the latest amenities for residents. The security fence and gates help make this a safe and desirable place to live. This is no longer a housing project for the poor, though some of the apartments are set aside for lower income people. The majority of the apartments are rented out at market rate. When I started my walking tours ten years ago this was a depressing, run-down set of buildings. Memphis residents feared walking around here. Policemen sometimes stopped me with a warning not to go further. The change I have witnessed is remarkable. To see Elvis' apartment building, walk on Third Street towards the highway.
