Album Info:

Maunawili Falls is the payoff for a strenuous hike on a slippery, muddy trail through steamy tropical rainforests and a steep razorback ridge. You have to traverse a stream several times along the way. It is an absolute must to waterproof your gear in transit and carry a hiking staff for stability. While Maunawili is a popular swimming hole for local residents, the falls often gets overlooked by visiting tourists. Getting a photograph without a bunch of people in it is next to impossible as it is located in a very narrow gorge. The water is very cold and refreshing after the hike in but it is also tainted with leptosporosis... so you definitely want to keep out if you have any open cuts or sores. The valley is often enveloped with clouds. The available lighting can be difficult to work with. I've found the best time to shoot is around midday with the sun at it's zenith. Canon 30D with Canon EF 18-55 mm lens. Photomatix Pro 3 HDR tonal mapping +2/-2. Orton Effect.
