The current walls of Old City were built in the 16th century by Suleiman the Magnificent, the sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Many sections of the walls were built in proximity to or on top of remains of earlier walls. There are 8 gates (one of which is closed). Until the 1870s the gates were closed every day at sunset.
