This was the North(?) entrance to the Summer Palace. China has these traditional lions in front of many entrances. The female (pictured) is always on the left and she symbolizes fertility. You can see the baby under her paw. The Chinese believe if you touch the statue, it will bring you fertility. The male (not pictured) symbolizes power and success. He is always on the right, and under his paw is a ball (Chinese culture is very focused on circles and their symbolism of life.)
