Album Info:

(DSC00184) There is no entrance fee to see Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm, but one can buy items from the souvenir shop. Snacks and drinks are available at the souvenir shop and so are handcrafted items made by the prisoners. Upon entering the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm there are prisoners who entice tourists to buy their hand-made wares. They are low security prisoners who are allowed to roam freely. (Taken from http://www.palawanboard.com/iwahig-priso n-and-penal-farm.php) ... Kamagong or "Mabolo" is a fruit tree found only in the Philippines, the wood of which is extremely dense and hard, and famous for its dark color. It belongs to the ebony family (genus Diospyros), and like many other very hard woods is sometimes called "iron wood" so called because its wood is iron-like and nearly unbreakable, hence the term "ironwood". The word Mabolo is Filipino for hairy and describes the fruit's hairy exterior. The tree is grown for its rich-tasting fruit as well as its beautifully grained black timber, which is used in furniture making & wood carving. (Taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamagong)
