The Church of the Flagellation or Scourging was first built in the 12th century by the Crusaders and then left abandoned after the Crusader period ended. It was given to the Franciscans in 1838 and rebuilt through the generosity of Maximilian of Bavaria, as attested to by a stone in the façade.
