Album Info:

Commonly known as Diamond Head, Le'ahi is a 150,000 year old extinct volcanic cone which can be seen from across leeward O'ahu. The name Diamond Head was coined by 19th century british sailors who mistook embedded calcite crystals in the area for diamonds. Le'ahi literally translates as "Tuna Ridge" because of its resemblance to the dorsal fin of an ahi or tuna. Diamond Head is a designated United States National Monument. A dusty trail, coupled with concrete steps through a series of old coastal defense tunnels, leads from the caldera floor to a lookout at the highest point providing a grand view of leeward O'ahu. If you plan on making this day hike wear sturdy shoes and be sure to bring plenty of water, a flashlight and a camera. Diamond Head has been prominently featured in the television series "Lost" which is filmed on location on the island. A little insider's tip... "Diamond Head" is also a local O'ahu term synomymous with the direction "east".
