The first European explorer to visit the Point Reyes Peninsula is believed to have been Sir Frances Drake, who arrived in 1579 to repair his ship, the Golden Hinde. Over the years, Point Reyes has been the scene of numerous ship wrecks because of the fog, wind, and rugged coastline jutting into the Pacific Ocean.
