Album Info:
The Tianyi Pavilion, also called the Precious Libraty, was built during the 40th Jia Jing Year of the Ming Dynasty (1561-1566).It was the library of the Defense Minister, Fan Qing, at the same time. It is the earliest private library still in existence in China. According to the old saying:¡°One room in the sky produces water, six rooms on the ground bring peace¡±, Fan Qing took the meaning of using water to stop the fire and built one big room upstairs and six rooms downstairs. He named it Tianyi Pavilion (Tianyi means one room in the sky).In addition,he dug ponds and pools to protect the books from fire. In the 4th Kang Xi Year of the Qing Dynasty (1665), Fan Guangwen, the great grand-son of Fan Qing, built rock gardens and flower gardengs in front of the pavilion. The general idea of the shapes is based on Fu, Lu, Shou (happiness, wealth, and long life). He also built the rocks which formed the shape of nine lions and one elephant. They are beautiful and show the characteristics of South China gardens. Fan Qing originally kept over 70000 books. Now only 17000 books are still in existence. They are mostly carved books or hand-copied books of the Ming Dynasty. Quite a few of them are the only copies in the world. They are mostly local chronicles and records of imperial examinations. After 1949, through the cultural relic workers hard search and the generous donation of local book-col-lectors,the number of ancient books kept in the pavilion reached 300000,among which 80000 are rare books.
