An interesting structural component of the church is the lateral bays that act as interior buttressing. This is completely different from all the colonial churches where the wall buttresses flare out at the exterior side of the church walls. Within each compartmentalized bay is a side chapel. Seven side chapels line the entire length of each side of the nave.

    • As far as I know, the (40) side chapels primary purpose is for the private Mass of the monks in this monastery, not for devotion to particular saint, though they can do so.

    • The side chapel arrangement is similar to the Sacre Qeur in Paris where individual devotion for saints may be dedicated. This is indeed a beautiful display of Baroque (Spanish/Mexican) style. Very colorful.
