Album Info:

(DSC02818) This boat's name is Balangay "Masawa Hong Butuan". The other balangays that travelled the Philippines and Southeast Asia were Balangay "Diwata ng Lahi" and Balangay "Sama Tawi-Tawi". Manned by members of the First Philippine Mt. Everest Expedition team, the balangay flotilla left Philippine waters from Butuan and began their 14,000-kilometer odyssey that sought to retrace the seafaring routes of ancient Filipinos. The crew took the migration route of the Austronesians of ages ago. These ancient mariners sailed the seas by observing the direction of migrating birds, the location of the sun and the stars, and cloud and wave patterns. Although the team intended to sail as faithfully as possible to the ancient ways, team leader Arturo Valdez and his group did not do away with technology entirely, such as cell phones and GPS (global positioning system) devices. On Aug. 15, 2010 three replicas of the wooden balangay took its crew, led by Valdez, from port to port in foreign territories of Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Cambodia and Vietnam before journeying back to the Philippines.
