The SW gate.
mikesey > albums > The Real Camelot.
Album Info:
The (what is now) a break in the rampart line, is the SW gate; two large wooden towers stood here in the Iron age, but in the Arthurian period, it was a single tower, straddling the gateway here. It had two heavy entrance gates. Info' from, Alcock L: "By South Cadbury is that Camelot: excavations at Cadbury castle 1966-70" Published 1972, Thames & Hudson. Salway.P: "Roman Britain". Oxford Univ., press, Published 1987. This place has been inhabited for about 4,000+ years; Neolithic arrow heads and artefacts have been found. The general layout, with ramparts and other fortifications were originally laid in the Iron-age, a period of relative quiet in history, circa 8th century BC. The Iron-age ended with the invasion of the Romans in AD 43. There is evidence of a battle between the Romans and the Iron-age tribe who lived here (the Durotriges) see the "scene of battle" pic for info on that.
