A closer view of the Sociable Weaver's nest

Album Info:
The sociable weaver’s nest sees plenty of guests. I understand the South African pygmy falcon relies completely on the sociable weavers’ nest for its own home, often nesting side by side with the sociable weavers. The pied barbet, familiar chat, red-headed finch and other small birds too find comfort in the cozy nesting chambers. The logic seems to be: more the number of birds more the protection against predators. Sociable weavers do not migrate; in fact, chicks may never leave the nest. Fledgling chicks might just move to an empty nesting chamber nearby.

How fascinating this is. I was actually thinking about the safety in numbers theory, just like fish who travel in schools. A wonderful capture. I think I would be sitting quietly waiting for some to return.

well this is just the cutest thing! They are probably very happy and have lots of other bird friends too ... hope they can find enough to eat around .... what do these little critters do for water in the desert? They must not need much. I imagine it takes them along time to build one of these gigantic apartment buildings. Would be very interesting to watch them do one, wouldn't it? Wonder what holds it together? some kind of gooey, sticky bird spit? hahhaha! no seriously, I bet that's it ...
