Album Info:
HOW IS THE TYPICAL VIGAN HOUSE BUILT? MASONRY: Most of the ancestral houses are usually made of solid brickwork laid in random bond, although walls constructed in a mixture of brick and stone also occur. There are also instances of walls with an internal rubble core. Variations in the sizes of bricks, which are usually large and thin, may be an indication of the date of the building, but this requires further research. The bricks are bonded by mortar made of lime and sand aggregate, containing a range of particle sizes, including small pebbles. The mortar joints are normally fairly thick. Masonry laid in lime mortar has a certain flexibility, almost certainly contributing to the proven good performance of these houses during earthquakes. The masonry is covered with plaster made of lime, sand, molasses, sap of an indigenous tree called sablot, among others. Partitions in the ground floor are also made of brick masonry, often pierced by brick arches. WOOD: In some houses, exterior walls of the second floor are made of hardwood planks. The timber used the structure includes molave (Vitex parviflora juss.), narek, ipil (Leucaena leucocephala), and parunapil: these hardwoods are generally resistant to termite attack. For interiors, narra (Pterocarpus indicus willo.) wood is used for internal partitions and floors. Ceiling planks can be made of tanguile (Shorea polysperma), which is a cheaper timber. Beams, rafters and trusses are also of hardwood. Partitions in the second floor are of wooden planks. Windows in the ground floor have hardwood mullions, or doorways enclosed by wooden gates or doors. Larger doorways often contain a smaller doorway providing access for pedestrians when the large door is closed.
