Album Info:

In the archaeological excavations of 1966-70, the results of burning were found, and scattered skeletal human remains were discovered in this gateway. Remains which were of about 30 men women and children, some had sword cuts to the Forearms indicating that the arms had been raised to fend off blows. It is thought that it was a battle between the Romans and the residents at that time, and may (arguably) have been an attack to evict the residents because of their support for the uprising of Queen Boudicca of the Iceni tribe, between AD 61-70. Some men from this fort may have fought alongside her. The corpses had been left "in Situ" and had probably been eaten by wolves, leading to them being disjointed and dispersed. Some archaeologists, or their diggers, felt "uncomfortable" and refused to continue to work at this spot. Pics of Queen Boudicca's statue in London are in my London folder. After the eviction, the Romans set-up a garrison in this place for a time: the remains of Roman buildings of rectangular shape have been found during the excavations. In previous digs, hundreds of beach pebbles were also found, these were probably used by the defenders as missiles in sling-shot weapons. Remember, this happened about C400 years before Arthur's time. Looking at this, one realises that things haven't changed much in 2,000 years, except that now we have even more diverse ways to 'dispatch' people and in even greater numbers.
