After traveling through all of the north and east coast of the island, Columbus left for Spain in January of 1493, in order to report the discovered lands to the Catholic Kings. Meanwhile, Caciques Maguaca Canoabo and Guacanagarix joined forces and decided to attack the Spaniards that had stayed in the La Navidad Fort, due to the abuses and crimes carried out by Diego de Arana and his group. The fort was completely burned and its defenders killed in this the first hostile encounter between the Spanish and the natives.
