The faces of the Bayon temple, Cambodia
suresh_krishna (Premium member) > albums > Cambodia - The Angkor Monuments
Album Info:
The similarity of the 200 or so gigantic faces on the temple's towers to other statues of the Jayavarman VII, has led many scholars to the conclusion that the faces are representations of Jayavarman VII himself. Others have said that the faces belong to the bodhisattva of compassion called Avalokitesvara. The two hypotheses need not be regarded as mutually exclusive. It has been theorized by scholars that Jayavarman stood squarely in the tradition of the Khmer monarchs in thinking of himself as a "devaraja" (god-king), the salient difference being that while his predecessors were Hindus and regarded themselves as consubstantial with Shiva, Jayavarman as a Buddhist identified himself with the Buddha and the bodhisattva.

Love the use of the gentle tree in the background of this capture Suresh, it softens the heaviness & almost overpowering quality of the temple faces.
