Album Info:

The falls are a very popular swimming area for local youths. Do NOT enter the water if you have any open cuts or sores. Leptospirosis bacteria is in the water and it can potentially make you extremely sick or even kill you. Personally, I do not recommend swimming or wading in the fresh water streams and ponds of O'ahu regardless of how inviting it appears to be.

    • Phooey! It does look mighty inviting! Stinks that there's deadly bacteria in it. Oh well, if I go, I guess I'll just enjoy the beauty "from a distance" ;-(

    • Wonderful shot! I just read your caption. It's ironic how potentially deadly bacteria exist in such a seemingly perfect place.

    • It is a lovely waterfall Clark! Thank you for providing the warning about the Leptospirosis bacteria in the fresh water. There are also the dangers of exposure to Streptococcus, as well as many other viruses, bacteria and parasites. There are many people who are unaware of the dangers and I believe it would be a good idea for the County to post warnings at the sites since it is so serious and they are frequented by so many unsuspecting visitors. The problem exists here on Maui as well as the other islands and most any fresh water lake, pond or stream anywhere in the world including the mainland. I knew of this while living in Alaska and it was one of the reasons I never entered Chena River Lakes, although it appears so clear and clean, untouched by motors with restrictions for kayaks, canoes or paddle boats only, and there was a swimming 'beach' (composed of lovely glacial silt) frequented in summer by many locals and tourists who enjoyed it on family outings and picnics. I think my first awareness of the dangers lurking in fresh water lakes and streams was while I was living in Fort Collins Colorado in my early twenties and someone thankfully educated me about this in reference to the Horsetooth Reservoir. So, from that moment on, I have never swam in a lake, river or stream. Here on Maui I only enter the ocean. I love the fern growing along the rocks here. It looks so cool here in the shade.
