  • Hello Rich, thank you so much for your note, I am happy you are enjoying my newest additions to Emerquinox ~ The Spirit of Alaska. Did you know more than one Moose is still Moose. Many Moose, or two Moose, or one Moose, it is always Moose. Just thought you would want to know that. :) I have many more. This beautiful Cow Moose and her yearling calf permitted me to watch and photograph them for over an hour! I have over 100 shots of them. But of course I wouldn't wish to post them all, but I will upload a few more if you would like to check back and see them! I wish you a beautiful day Rich, it is always wonderful to hear from you! Greetings from The Great White North! Sharon

  • How exciting to see these two Moose. I see how the young stays a little behind Mom where it would be a little safer.

  • how ever do you get so close to such huge animals that live out in the wild? how do you keep your camera going in such cold weather? you live in a world most people only dream about.

  • Awesome! I know we do have moose (not a lot, but a few) in Northern/Western MA, but I have yet to ever see one, here(or anywhere else for that matter!).

  • Thank you so much everyone for your kind notes!! Many of my viewers seem to perceive I am standing on the ground within arms length of this 1200+ lb Moose!! I wish for everyone to know and understand that I remained in my truck watching her with her adorable calf for well over an hour. And while she did approach me as I remained in my truck watching her, (with my engine idling and heater blowing!!) once she decided I was no threat to her, she seemed as curious about me as I was about her and her darling calf! The Cows are very protective of their young, and the Bulls are aggressive and unpredictable as well. And I would advise everyone to never approach a Moose. She is a 'resident' Moose, and she and her calf live in the deep forest surrounding my home near North Pole. She is wild, and certainly not tame, as someone asked. A Cow Moose will kill you if you come between her and her calves. Cows are generally not hunted, and she is simply accustomed to being around humans since she is one of several generations of Moose born in this area. With an abundance of Diamond Willow (their favourite) and other tender shoots along the roadways, and the remnants of summer gardens, they simply brush off the snow with their noses and browse. She has no need to migrate. There are many many more in my area. They are elusive however, and nocturnal for the most part, so it is always a thrill to see one! It is only in winter when one sees them struggling to survive the deep winter browsing during the daylight hours. And then too, in winter it is dark for so many hours so the night is extended! The calf's first winter is the most precarious. This calf is experiencing her first winter. During summer it is late evening, dusk, during the night and early morning when one sees the beautiful Moose browsing and foraging along the roadways. Sharon

  • thanks for explaining that you were safely in the protection of your truck when you took this picture. duh! what as i thinking? this seems so close! like "RUN for the safety of your house, Human!" LOL i used to live in moose country, then moved to coyote and mountain lion country. is that a step up or down? LOL thanks for good childhood memory reminder here.

  • Thanks for your wonderful explanation how you patiently waited save in the car. I have once seen mother moose with her offspring on a very remote country road just crossing in front of my car. Did not dare to stop and I would not have been able to take a shot they disappeared in the woods. By the way, do you know of the Russian Ice Station Borneo? It is a tent city, the Russians build it every year in April for visitors and scientists, when the conditions are right. I know a couple who will be flying there in April coming from Norway, Spitzbergen. Once there, a heliocopter will take them and their guide to a spot where it is safe to land and from there they will be skiing towards the North Pole. Each of them will have a canoe to pull along. They store their gear, like a tent and provisions, in the canoe. The canoe is needed, if there is a crack in the ice and they have to cross water. You live way up there, probably miles and miles away, but I thought, maybe this interests you, especially since you are, besides a wonderful photographer, a journalist. by the way, the couple is in their seventies, amazing! Have a good weekend Sharon!

  • Sharon, It is about time that I got my world atlas out. I found Fairbanks, but not Northpole, Alaska. But if you live in Fairbanks, the distance between you and the real North Pole is about the same as from Fairbanks to Winnipeg. Since I have never traveled up there, there was a different map in my head then reality. Now all the world travelers can have a good laugh!

  • Thank you sweetheart! North Pole Alaska is about a twenty minute drive from Fairbanks Alaska on Badger Road. I don't live in Fairbanks, I did live about midway in a rural area in the deep forest between Fairbanks and North Pole. I now live on Maui. Thank you so much for your wonderful notes!! I wish you a beautiful day! Sharon

  • Oh Sharon; How wonderful that this very special photo was chosen to be featured today. I remember how excited yu were that you got this image of Mom and Baby. What sweet and rare memories for you and a special honor to see it here this morning. I enjoyed reading your commentary about their habits as I will probably never get to have this opportunity to see them this close. Warm wishes, Marjie

  • Hi sharon! Congratulations on haveing this album selected for a Members Choice award in the Alaska section of the Travel channel. There was never any doubt in my mind that you would never be doing anthig that would be a threat to the wildlife. You are much too professional for that and I am happy that you clarified it for the others who mage comments. I also thank you very much for commenting on my images (the leaf in the snow and the ???) from my three a week postings. Any and all comments from you are regarded highly. Thanks again for taking the time to do so.
