This city was strategically situated between two streams and along a major trade route being at the junction of Jezreel and Jordan valleys. Assigned to tribe of Manasseh. When Saul and his sons were killed in battle their bodies were hung from the walls of this city. The Assyrians conquered and destroyed the city in 732BC. It was abandoned for about 400 years. Under the Greeks, it was the largest city in the regional alliance known as the Decapolis. It changed hands many times and was mostly destroyed by an earthquake in 749AD.
