College Fjord, Alaska

Album Info:
Nestled among the Chugach mountains, the College Fjord was discovered in an epic, scientific expeditionary kayaking trip by John Muir and other scientists in 1899. Traveling in their small boats through a small aperture in the icebergs, they discovered many huge glaciers sweeping into the fjord. The College Fjord, with its many glaciers, is approximately 20 miles long to the face of the Haravard glacier. Many of the members of the scientific expedition led by Muir had attended Ivy league colleges. They named the glaciers they found in the fjord after their alma mater or the collage attended by their spouse.. As the ship enters the fjord, the glaciers on the left side are named after women's colleges, and those on the right side after men's collages. Though many glaciers have receded since the time of John Muir, to see the collection of these many glaciers in such a small fjord is, indeed, an experience of a life time.

An interesting sideline here is that offshoots of the Muir family came out to Western Australia and settled in a small country town called Manjimup. One of the great great grandsons - Gary Muir - is very conservation minded and runs an incredible daily Wilderness cruise at Walpole in the far south of our state
