Album Info:

(DSC04975a) CAPIZ WINDOWS: The planning and overall design of Vigan houses may be related to the architecture of Mexico and Spain, but the constructional details are often oriental. For example, capiz windows (left) were thought to derive from Japanese models, but it is now clear that they are based on Chinese prototypes, as in the Ming dynasty houses at Zhouzhuang, Jiangsu Province. The mix used for plaster, which contains molasses and sablot leaves, is similar to plaster used in Vietnam. More research is required on this topic, which reflects Vigan’s origins as a multi-ethnic trading centre.
