Margerie glacier, Glacier Bay, Alaska

Album Info:
The Margerie Glacier is an excellent example of a tide-water glacier - that is, a glacier that extends into a body of water. The cruise ships have been a subject of controversy between the advocates of tourism and the environmentalists. Originally, the number of ships were limited to 79 per year, however, the lobby for tourism had it increased to 200 per year. After sustained campaigning by the environmentalists, the number of ships that can cruise into the bay has now been restricted to 139 per year. While the photograph of the cruise ship in front of the glacier looks attractive, the fumes coming out of the chimney of the ship is a disturbing sight.

We didn't get to see this, but I agree, it should be preserved at all costs. It takes nature so long to make one of these and who are we to destroy it in our selfishness.
