Album Info:

Ancient Leaning Pagoda Straightens Up The Bureau of Surveying and Mapping of Xi’an says that the city’s millennium-old Dayan (Big Wild Goose) Pagoda moved 9.4 mm back towards perpendicularity between 1997 and 2006. The brick structure was built during the Tang Dynasty so that prominent Buddhist master Xuanzang could store the Sanskrit Buddhist scriptures he brought back from India. Historical records show that it had slanted to the northwest by 19.8 cm in 1719 during the reign of Qing Emperor Kangxi. And a 1996 survey found its inclination increase to a dangerous 1.01 meters. The local government took measures in 1997 to limit the use of groundwater in the city, alleviating ground sinking in the region where the pagoda stands. It has since been straightening up by approximately one millimeter a year.
