Liliuokalani Falls

Album Info:
I was excited about my grandsons flying out with their mother to spend the summer with us in the islands. I had a couple of hours to kill prior to picking them up at the airport, so I decided if I had to be in the city anyway, it would be a good time to drive out to this park... specifically to photograph the falls. I had been to the area on several occasions before and already knew that it was potentially a great location. It is hard to imagine that this oasis is completely surrounded by the urban jungle of downtown Honolulu. My destination was a foot bridge which spans the Nu'uanu stream giving a splendid view of the falls framed by magnificent old trees. As I was walking along the path, I became somewhat dismayed when I noticed all of the man made debris littering the water upstream. I passed two queen sized bed mattresses and rubbish of every size and description. I also noticed that the underside of the bridge spans were completely covered with gang related grafitti. Undaunted, I set up my camera equipment on the bridge and prepared for the session. I became totally disillusioned when I looked through my view finder. The downstream side of the falls was also completely marred with too much large debris and rubbish to Photoshop out later. Determined not to be defeated, I walked down to the water's edge, kicked off my slippers, and waded in... I spent the next hour and a half pulling large refuse (including about thirty square feet of waterlogged carpet) out of the stream bed, up the bank, and depositing it all by the trash cans for disposal. This photograph is a testament to my work. I showed up at the airport sweat soaked, exhausted and dirty but satisfied that I had made a difference. Canon 30D with Canon EF 18-55 mm lens. Photomatix Pro 3 +2/-2 HDR tone mapping. 4/28/2009@2:41:57 pm HST. Aperture Priority AE. TV 1/30 AV 13 ISO 100 WB: Cloudy

Good job on the clean up. It's sad that you had to...that people don't appreciate what they have. All your pictures are fantastic. Keep up the good work.

I cant believe the inhabitants of this planet, which gives us our whole survival, will willingly destroy, litter and graffiti everything in their sight. The plastics in the ocean, the rubbish on the shore, bags in streams, litter in forests etc.etc., and so many just walk past it. I like you, remove litter tirelessly. Sometimes a passby will thank me for "cleaning up the environment". If we all did our little bit, it would add up to a huge effort. Thanks for doing your share and helping make my environment better.........Peter May, Australia

What a wonderful honor for you, Clark to be featured on the front page of Webshot, yet again this month. As they say, cream rises to the top (am I giving away my age???) and it is truly a delight to see your work featured here. This story as well is a reminder to all of us that we have a special responsibility to our planet and the beauty that it holds. Most people would not have bothered to lift a hand, but you jumped in and truly did make the difference. This is an awesome photo and now resides on my desktop. I am so happy for you and the honor you receive today.

My CONGRATULATIONS Clark for POTD and the special efforts you took to clean up this area. A most enjoyable read indeed. My congrats for your concern for the environment that surrounds us...Good for you, a working photographer...I love it.

As "Mr. Rogers" used to say, I'd like to be your friend. Being up to date with electronic cameras, you can certainly post pictures of a much higher quality than 50 years ago when I was in the Navy. FYI, if you have 35mm slides, you can buy at COSTCO a really good slide to JPG device. It is called "PrimeFilm 3650u" and has good software to take the scratches out. My pix are mostly of far east ports, US NAVY ships, the Philippines, including Corregidor and a collection of pics depicting what a floating dry dock does.
said tpuhinesor
Congratulations Clark, on a wonderful POTD and an inspiring story. If more people picked it up, and fewer threw it out, our streams and roadsides might not be the embarassment they are. Kudos for your good deed and your fine photography! Best regards- Lynne

I Salute you and thank you for your efforts in displaying Gods beautiful creations. I do not understand why so many people want to destroy it. I get so angry when I am behind someone throwing trash out the car window when all we hear about is going green. Everyone needs to do their part and be responsable. Great collection and congratulations as the featured album. Well deserved.

I praise you for the great work you did clearing up a beautiful place! It really hurts when people trash any area with their throwaway junk, but in a park? What is wrong with these people! We need more people like you! By the way, the shot is great! All the best to you, Katherine
