Today US 40 makes a sharp left here and enters I-70, but it used to continue straight down the hill to where the old road disappears under the new I-70.

  • What is interesting is, the four lanes of US-40 deadends on the other side of the I-70 a little more than a mile west from where this photo was taken. My grandfather's paving crew worked on all of this road. Both the I-70 and the earlier 4 lane US-40 version. You are taking this photo from the middle of Lady Bend Hill. Legend has it that a gilted lover lost her head on this hill on a stormy night and she still haunts it to this day. Malcolm

  • The one time I came through here, there wasn't very good signage pointing you to 70/40, and I ended up driving to the end of old 40. There was a metal guardrail between the eastbound and westbound lanes then, so I had to drive up on the hill to turn around. They built the hill on top of 40 without removing the road, and so the guardrail ran right into the hill.
