Album Info:
(DSC04954) BUILDING LAY-OUT: Built as a house of commerce, the Vigan house has a ground floor that is entered through a central hallway from which the stairs rise to the upper floor. Homeowners could alight from their carriage inside the building and the hallway would normally serve as the garage for carriages. Flanking rooms provided storage for rice and other agricultural produce. On one area of the ground floor, usually to one side, is a double-flight staircase, shaped like the letter āJā, that leads to the second floor. The staircase normally leads into the ante sala, which is normally a long room where visitors would wait on a long settee. Visitors of higher social standing would be taken through to the sala, the largest room on the second floor, which served principally as a formal reception room, but also provided access to single flanking bedrooms providing separate accommodation for boys and girls in the family. Another room served as the principal bedroom for the owner of the house. The dining room, close to the kitchen, is usually separated from the living room or family hall by a wooden partition or a hallway. Female servants more often slept in a room near the kitchen, while male servants slept in one of the rooms on the ground floor. The presence of an oratory in the houses of the original families is a manifestation of the devoutness of the homeowners.
