Album Info:

This geologic oddity is the remnant of a volcanic plug rising out of the middle of this fjord cruise passage, and named by Captain George Vancouver for resembling a lighthouse in England. It also serves as a resting place for harbor seals.

  • I just recently returned from a trip to Alaska and during my trip had an opportunity to ask about this site. It seems there is a baby girl buried on this island. She wasn't a princess.

  • It is indeed a most unique rock formation and I am so fascinated by the Eddtstone name after the lighthouse 12 miles off our Devonshire coast near Plymouth. I took a few images of the famous Smeaton's Tower in Plymouth a few weeks ago, it stood as the light for Eddystone Rocks for over 100 years till the rock foundations started to crumble, it was taken apart and re-assembled on Plymouth ##### and still stands proudly there today. If you are interested,it's in my Westcountry of England album, image # 3.

  • Old George certainly got around because he was out here too and we have a couple of places named after him. We also have volcanic plugs but they are insignificant compared to this one.

  • This mystical island, no doubt, makes a great landmark for navigators during the day! The lighthouse without the light!
