Makawao is located at an elevation of 1,600 feet resulting in a climate that many would call ideal. The Hawaiian word Makawao translates to 'edge of the forest'. It is just outside the rainforest areas of Haleakala. While it will get occasional trade showers to keep its pasture land fresh and green, it is drier than areas in adjoining Haiku. The elevation also provides cooler temperatures during the heat of the summer. While this elevation is suitable for tropical foliage, Makawao is better known for its tall and stately eucalyptus trees. The cooler air, the surrounding pastureland and Eucalyptus Groves make for a great setting. While located at 1,600 feet, the beaches of Maui are still very accessible. The beach town of Pa'ia is only 15 to 20 minutes down Baldwin Avenue.
