The walls of the Torre del Homenaje are a meter and half thick and the structure has proved to be a secure refuge during hurricanes and earthquakes. The nature of the construction is that it continues compacting making it stronger with the passage of time. Even though it is more than 500 years old it is considered safer and longer lasting than many modern buildings.
