Yemin Mohse and Mishkenot Shaananim

orlyyahalom > albums > Jerusalem: The Old City

Album Info:

In 1860, Mishkenot Shaananim was the first neighborhood (actually, a almshouse) built outside the Old City walls in the modern era. The poverty and crowdedness caused a group of Jews to leave the safety of the walled city. They were inspired and helped by the British Jewish philanthropist, Sir Moses (Moshe) Montefiore, who also built the wind-driven flour mill seen here.
