On the right slope was the Ancient City of David. I'll return there later. The border used to pass around here, with Mt Zion on the Israeli side and the village of Silwan on the Jordanian side. After the Israeli victory in 1967, fearing of losing Jerusalem again, Israel annexed the newly won territories in East Jerusalem. Their inhabitants became residents, but not citizens of Israel, a status granting social and municipal rights but not the right to vote for parliament.
