The Road to Hana ~ Maui Hawai'i

Album Info:
The Hana Highway, or as most of us say, the Highway to Heaven, or road to heavenly Hana, was designated in 1999 as a National Millenium Legacy Trail, and in June 2001 most of it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. But it has long been known as one of the nation's most scenic highways, and one of Maui's major tourist attractions. It is also a notoriously narrow, wonderfully winding road, with hundreds of hairpin curves through beautiful tropical rainforest with many waterfalls along the way, dozens of one-lane historic stone bridges, and typical average speeds of only 10 - 15 mph (allow at least three hours from Kahului to O'heo Gulch, preferably more to make time for the abundant fantastic photo opportunities along the way). Many Maui visitors and tourists hate to drive the road at night, though I and many Maui residents prefer night driving (less sightseer traffic, and on blind curves you get more advance warning of oncoming traffic from their headlamps, but drive slowly as you don't want to careen off a cliff or run down a wandering animal in the darkness. Try to make the drive to Hana in at least one direction during daylight, and on a clear day when you're not in a hurry! It is so much more relaxing to enjoy the beautiful scenery at a leisurely pace, and of course with a camera! Also, as everyone knows, make way for the locals speeding down the center lane in their trucks with their pig hunting dogs in the back as they are on a mission!! Remember the aloha spirit, as it is customary to wave to oncoming motorists. Honking your horn is considered very rude on Maui so please slow down, as we say on the island, this ain't the mainland! Early morning light is the best, very blue, very beautiful!!
