Album Info:

(DSC02148) The "Dance of Labi" is a healing ritual. "Labi" means superior. That is, it is a spirit who is "more powerful" than a particular sickness and can, therefore, cure it. The healing ritual is done in a richly decorated place, usually imitating a wedding celebration. The ritual performers - a male and a female - dance to the sound of the "kulintang" (native xylophone made up of small gongs) and invite the spirits to possess them. The dancers show diverse movements depending on the spirits that have possesed them. Some of the spirits frequently invoked by the dancers are the air spirit, the water spirit, the fire spirit, and the tree or forest spirit. Records show that some ritual dancers often perform a war dance as they enter into a trance. Their bodies shake. It is in this similar state of spirit possession that they begin to perform healing practices. (Taken from an adjacent signage)
