"Although James continued to grow rice until 1913, he fought a losing battle. With the end of slavery rice planters could no longer command cheap labor, and there was little money to pay people to work the fields. When James Dent died in 1913, Hofwyl-Broadfield was still in debt. His son, Gratz, established a dairy which was operated until 1942 by his sisters, Miriam and Ophelia Dent."
