Album Info:

No... it isn't a pineapple tree although the female plants do bear a fruit that looks strikingly like a pineapple. This was one of the most important trees to the ancient Hawai'ians. Weaving the leaves, a procedure known as lauhala, could produce a variety of versatile products ranging from baskets to roofing material and even a strong rope. Hala trees can be found throughout the tropics because their seeds float!

    • Can the fruit also be eaten? It's amazing that it floats, because it does resemble a pineapple. I wonder what it looks like when cut open and what it would taste like. Thanks for sharing such info.
