Album Info:

(DSC03468) Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) ..... It was not all academics in Teachers’ Camp. The Camp provided a vacation spot for many American teachers who long for the company of their own. The Camp successfully addressed a painful problem experienced by most American educators while working in the Philippines: Americans had a difficult time adjusting to Philippine weather, culture, people & environment. Therefore, when boredom, homesickness, depression or some dire problems arise, these teachers tended to miss & long for the company of their friends and colleagues. Teachers’ Camp gave the Americans the chance to “socialize with people of their own race.” There were costume parties and dances at the Pines Hotel. There were various performances and shows to watch, and many even participated in these performances. In the rightful belief that physical activity is important for a person's well-being, Camp organizers saw fit to form outdoor activities designed for visitors regardless of age, size or sex. Baseball, basketball, gut of war, ball passing relay, potato relay, three jumps relay, and Indian wrestling were just some of the sport events and games played in camp. Interestingly enough, there were even inter-institution competitions like Teachers’ Camp vs. the Camp John Hay team, Manila vs. the Government Center team. Such competitions allowed teachers to expand their social circles. (Taken from Heritage Conservation Society)

    • Hi MaryAnn. For me it was not hard to find this sunflower as I've read all the explanation you gave under it and that helped me to understand more of your country. So sorry to hear that webshots is moving, it has been so much fun to feel connected to people from places all over the world. I very much enjoyed watching your photos, reading your messages and hope we will kind of meet again. I have moved my albums to smile and hope to learn how it works soon. I understand that you can keep on visiting each other's albums if you know the e-mailadress of your friend. Here's mine vangeer(@)planet.nl Let me end with a positive message: our Philippine daughter works as a substitute teacher on the public school in her hometown. I'm so happy for her.
