Album Info:

The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood is one of the main Russian Orthodox churches of St. Petersburg, Russia. It is also variously called the Church on Spilt Blood and the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, its official name. The name refers to the blood of the assassinated Alexander II of Russia, who was mortally wounded on that site on March 13, 1881 (Julian date: March 1). Construction began in 1883 under Alexander III, as a memorial to his father, Alexander II. Work progressed slowly and was finally completed during the reign of Nicholas II in 1907.

    • Hi Alex, this church looks like something from a fairy tale. Such a beautiful building. The architecture is so different from what we see today. A true piece of art. Wonderful photo. Dirk from Montreal, Canada

    • No matter how many times I look at this church is beautiful...I knew a lady, who was Riussian, and came to Us...became school principal and French teacher...she was old when she passed away and I miss her very much... She invited me regularly to tea...her silverware and samovar..and her long round stories that took half hour one sentence to finish...I loved it..to me the more words you use to express yourself th more eloquent you are...DOtn like short slangs what we use here in US...I mean dont count on me to use it:)) Doswidania....Marra

    • Hi Alex! One of the most beautiful churches to me. I love the Baroque, Classical and Modernist architecture, it still has the the form of medieval Russian architecture and to me the Neo-Byzantine was the most romantic architecture of all and that looks to be used in this great church, even though it was built during the Imperial period. I know I will not have time to comment on each of these but I do appreciate all the history you give and these beautiful scenes in Russia. Greetings and hugs from, OKLAHOMA. Susie
