Album Info:

I'olani Palace is located in downtown Honolulu. It is the only royal residence established within the borders of the United States. I'olani Palace was built for the Merrie Monarch, King David Kalakaua, in 1879. The palace boasted cutting edge amenities of the day including indoor plumbing, gas lighting fixtures (they were replaced with electrical fixtures only seven years after Thomas Edison invented the electric bulb), and the also newly invented telephone. The palace was the official residence of the Hawai'ian monarchy where state dinners, receptions and grand balls were held. Queen Lili'uokalani, the last reigning monarch of Hawai'i, was imprisoned in an upper bedroom for five years following her overthrow. During that time, she was allowed only a once a day visit by a chambermaid.
