The gate bears bullet signs from May 18 1948, when a brigade of the Palmach (initial Israeli Army) managed to conquer Mt Zion and break through to the besigned Jewish Quarter. However, reinforcements failed to arrive and the fighters retreated to their positions in Mt Zion. The Jewish Quarter fell 9 days later. As the war ended, the border passed near this gate, where Mt Zion is under Israel's rule and the Old City under Joran's, together with an area that became to be known as the West Bank.
