Sociable Weaver's nest (Philetarius socius)

Album Info:
The sociable weaver is a very common little brown bird in the desert region of southern Africa. Sociable weavers are unlike most other birds due to their lifestyle and nest building: they weave one nest for their entire colony as well as for future residents. This is no ordinary nest; it is massive, like a giant apartment block occupied by up to 100 sociable weaver families all year long. From a distance, the sociable weaver nest may resemble a haystack hanging in a tree. But if you crawl under the nest and look up you will see the entrances to the different chambers within the nest. There may be 5 to 100 nesting chambers in a single sociable weaver nest, providing a home for 10 to 400 birds!

The ultimate condominium. Wow, I am so impressed that one kind of bird would be this sociable to include so many others. Thank you for educating us on this amazing bird.

Wow! This is an amazing little bird - and a wonderfully sculptured tree, magnificent captured and described. It looks amazing against the blue sky with those wonderful far away mountains. Once again I have to say: it is such a pity the Webshot slideshow does not include the captions but only the titles of the pictures. But I am getting used to look at your albums by the Desktop utility which still includes the captions. Thanks for all your wonderful descriptions. They make your albums to jewels - in the sand . . . .
