Album Info:
Heaviside dolphins have a very limited range. They are only found of the coast of Southern Africa between Cape Town and Angola. They are often seen off Walvis Bay and on the stretch of coast between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. Pods are normally found in the same area, and they do not move far afield. They are found in water between nine and nineteen degrees Celsius, although studies indicate that they prefer the water to be below 15 degrees Celsius. Very little is known about them. They grow to 1,8 m and weigh up to 75 kg. They have blunt heads, which means they are often mistaken for porpoises. The head is dark grey. The body is grey, the upper body being dark grey to black. Their colouring lightens on the underside and they have a clear patch of white, extending from behind the dorsal fin to just above the tail. Their bellies are also white. In fact, their colouring is slightly similar to an Orca, but with more grey. They feed on hake and kingklip, but squid and octopus are also a part of their diets. They are very social animals and are normally found in groups of five to ten. They swin at high speeds and often jump out of the water, rewarding watchers with jumps and twists. When they land in the water, they don’t make a loud splash.
