Album Info:

(DSC08867) The Spaniards: Spanish priests & colonial officials saw a multitude of possibilities for Negros. They imposed abstract boundaries, created settlements, altered the flow of nature, and changed the religion of the indigenous people. The Jesuits (16th century) and the Recollects (18th century) provided the initial impetus for large scale agricultural production in the island. Recollect Father Fernando Cuenca modernized sugar production by building the first water powered mill in the 19th century. Government incentives and support likewise propelled the once-stagnant Negros into a thriving, commercialized, agricultural capital. (Taken from the Museun signage)
