Album Info:
"Saint Isidore was selected by the Franciscan Friars as the Saint of Farmers while Saint Louis Bishop of Tolouse, Spain, was originally designated as the Patron Saint of Lucban ... in August 19, 1595. According to the oral and recorded history of Lucban, the Feast of Saint Isidore was first observed by the natives who used to settle at the foot of Mt. Banahaw during the early Christianization of Lucban (in Quezon) circa 1500... The whole community conducted a simple celebration as a form of thanksgiving to (their pagan gods or 'anitos') for the good harvest of farm products such as palay, vegetables, fruits & fish. At harvest time, the farmers used to gather their harvests inside the chaplet or 'tuklong', where they used to converge and partake in a sumptuous meal. They drink 'tuba' from the flowers stalks of coconut, buri or cabo negro ('kaong'). The natives believed that by conducting this yearly merriment they are assured of another bountiful harvest the following year. When the first church was established in the present location, during the time of Captain Lukas Martin (1630) under the supervision of Fr. Alfonso de San Miguel (1628), evangelization of the natives became more pronounced. The natives cooperated with the help of the parish priest. During harvest time, the natives bring their select farm-produce inside the new and much bigger church where the parish priest used to bless the harvest as a form of thanksgiving to the Lord. As a result, the following year, the farmers experienced another plentiful harvest, thus intensifying beliefs and devotion to Saint Isidore (1595) as the intercessor of God's blessing to them. As the years passed, changes in the manner of celebrating the Saint Isidore Festival were effected because the church has become inadequate to accommodate the burgeoning harvests. So that after due consultations with the parish priest, it was agreed upon that the farmers' harvests be displayed right at the doorsteps in front of the house, where the parish priest can easily bless them as he makes a round of the houses in the community in a procession, with the townpeople carrying the images of Saint Isidore and Sta. Maria Toribia. Not contented with this change, the townpeople went on to outdo each other's doorsteps, making the procession more lively and colorful." Taken from http://www.pahiyasfestival.com
